The Seattle Municipal Court is actually truly a gorgeous setting for a wedding ceremony. Every time I go to shoot a wedding ceremony at the Seattle courthouse, it seems there are more couples waiting to be married there. It’s gotten super popular—and for good reason. You get a short, simple ceremony in a gorgeous setting overlooking the Seattle skyline.
Ana and Jaryd knew they wanted to keep their wedding very simple and special to them. Having recently moved to Washington and just purchasing their first home together, they wanted their wedding to be an opportunity to share their new home with a small, intimate group of their family and friends.
They got ready in their new house. Ana was tucked away in a bedroom, her closest friends attending to her every need. Jaryd and his friends took the time to play games outside. About twelve of their closest friends and family members were there, anxiously waiting to witness and celebrate their union. I absolutely love intimate gatherings like this, because that is how you really know who is closest to the couple. These are the people who mean the most.
Although they weren’t getting ready anywhere fancy, or preparing to greet a hundred guests, or doing any of the things you might consider “traditional” about a wedding, like having a formal reception with dancing and speeches, much of the getting-ready part of the day was coordinated in such a lovely way. We shooed the boys away from the yard so that I could grab a shot of the wedding dress hanging on the porch, with no one seeing it before they should. Ana’s rose gold jewelry matched the sparkling belt to her wedding dress perfectly, along with the rosé wine they drank as they got ready. Every detail they wore, from Ana’s golden rose pins to Jaryd’s cufflinks, were special and personal.
Soon it came time for them to have their first look beside the beautiful floral archway at the front of their house. A brief moment of feeling the anticipation of the rest of the day, together, before we all dashed off to the courthouse.
I wanted to include a few words about how Ana and Jaryd met and the beautiful bond they share, but I think Ana will describe it best:
“Jaryd and I met in Los Angeles when we were both taking a capoeira class. We developed a really good friendship over the course of a year and then eventually we started hanging out on our own. After about 3 movie outings, he officially asked me out on a date and professed that he had a “wee bit of a crush” on me. We were SO awkward in the first few months of our relationship. To the point where on a trip to Tucson for a capoeira event, in a picture that they took of us, it looks like we were dating other people at the time. Fast forward four years and several life moments, Jaryd asked me to marry him in our apartment. I had just come home late from work and when I opened the door the lights were out and the room was filled with lit candles–he was proposing like my favorite episode from Friends where Monica proposes to Chandler. It was beautiful and perfect for us. Three weeks later we moved up to Washington for a job opportunity for Jaryd. We decided to take leap of faith and our wedding in June is an opportunity to share our new home with a small intimate group of our family and friends.”
If you’re at all a Friends fan, you know Jaryd won the game with that gorgeous proposal. I DIED when I read about it! These two are seriously the most adorable couple who adds so much love and the perfect amount of goofy into life. They really wanted the day to be fun and relaxed, and to have photos that would tell a story. I think it was a success all around. :)
