My friend Adrienne thought she was just having a fun birthday weekend with friends in Winter Park, Colorado, but what she didn’t know is that her boyfriend Diego had been planning a little something extra special. Keep scrolling to see all about this super fun surprise proposal at Winter Park, Colorado!
These two have been together for seven years, so we all had reached the point of giving them a hard time for not just getting married already, but they needed the timing to be just perfect.
Everyone spent the morning hanging out in costume onesies (a tradition Adrienne started with her friends every time they would make a mountain trip) and making breakfast. We all gathered around the dining room table to sing Adri happy birthday, as Diego carried in a stack of waffles. Instead of candles, an engagement ring was propped among the berries and whipped cream.
At that moment, a door opened, and in walked Adri’s parents and three of our other best friends from high school, who had all secretly traveled in from out of state. Diego got down on one knee and started his speech about how much he loves their life together. He made everyone laugh when he said how glad he was that they met on Craigslist all those years ago (buying and selling snowboarding gear in Colorado can apparently lead you to meet your soulmate.) Adrienne had always told Diego she thought it would be wonderful if everyone she loved could be there when they finally got engaged, and she was so overwhelmed she could not stop crying. Really, neither could anyone else. And of course, she said YES!
We spent the rest of the day celebrating with an impromptu engagement party, complete with a photo booth, sparkly balloons, a memory book, some early engagement presents, winter games in the snow, and of course mimosas.
Adri and Diego (okay, maybe more so Adri) have had a thing for penguins forever, and we’ve always said they’re going to be like penguins and mate for life, so it was really fitting that on this day they wore their matching penguin onesies. Obviously I had to snap a few shots of the two penguins showing off the ring.
As far as engagements go, this one was pretty perfect. I love seeing how different every couple’s love story and proposal story can be. Every story is unique, and when the little details can reflect that individuality I just think that is so special. For a couple who is so close to their friends and family, and has a deep attachment to the mountains, this setting could not have been a better fit for them. The fact that they were wearing their matching penguin onesies is just SO Adrienne and Diego. Diego worked so hard to make this moment a surprise for Adrienne and he was 100% successful—quite the feat for a couple who has been together seven years and lived together for five! Everyone was antsy with anticipation leading up to the proposal, and my favorite part about these photos is how perfectly they capture the emotion around the room. I hope Adri and Diego cherish them forever, and I cannot wait to witness them actually get married.
