I have been dreaming about Ashley and Dan’s Brown Family Homestead wedding day ever since they first reached out to me. Think of a quaint, simple ceremony and reception site tucked among some of the most gorgeous mountain views you can ever imagine. That is the Brown Family Homestead venue, and Ashley and Dan knew exactly how to bring it even more to life with their plans for their special day. It was truly an absolute dream.
From the beginning, Ashley and Dan knew they wanted to keep their day simple and laid back. When I first spoke with them, Ashley told me that they were just excited to get together with family and friends and be swept up in the beauty of the homestead. But with her being quite the creative mind and a big crafter, she couldn’t help but bring together so many little personal details to go along with a rustic camp + old literature theme. If you wouldn’t have thought to combine a camp theme with a bookworm theme—just wait until you see how these details go together. For each guest there was an old-fashioned catalog card with their names printed on them letter-press style, along with a tin campfire mug emblazoned with a custom Ashley + Dan wedding logo. The centerpieces were a mix of wildflowers, piles of antique books, and old library card catalog boxes, with the table numbers hand-painted on vintage book pages. Like, how absolutely unique and amazing is that? For a couple who loves the outdoors, crafting, and reading books (Ashley works for the library, so it’s no wonder she’s full of those beautiful bookish ideas!) I cannot think of a more perfect setting for their wedding.
And I’m not even finished describing all the details—but you can just scroll down and see for yourself if you’re sick of reading. ;) There was also a trail mix bar fitted with all the tin pots and pans a good hipster could desire, and a table full of homemade pies atop wooden pedestals and burlap and antique lace. The pie topper was a bride and groom poodle couple and a mini stack of books. Ashley and Dan’s own poodle Penny made an appearance at the wedding and had her own handmade Dog of Honor outfit.
The cuteness doesn’t stop.
Each bridesmaid had her own flower crown, and Ashley’s own flower crown was out of this world. The girls and guys all got ready in matching, monogrammed plaid flannel shirts. The guys had matching, monogrammed leather suspenders, and each and every hanger had the A+D wedding logo imprinted on it. The corsages and boutonnieres were, again, all handmade by Ashley—all containing pine cone, burlap, and old book page details—again embodying that perfect union of the outdoors and old-fashioned books.
What really struck me about this wedding day, though, was how well Ashley and Dan, along with both of their families, truly seemed to fit together. It was as though this day was meant to happen all along, since the day they met at the Sasquatch Music Festival six years earlier. Everyone they loved came together on a Tuesday (that’s right, brides, you’re not limited to getting married on a Saturday!) to witness these two exchange heartfelt vows, make big speeches, and dance the night away like it was 1999.
This was one of my absolute favorite weddings to photograph to date. Brides and grooms, take note: you can make your wedding be whatever you want it to be. Personalize it. Make it yours. Bring your loved ones out into the mountains to celebrate in the natural beauty of your surroundings. And then bring me with you so I can capture it all for you to remember forever. ;)
