Adrienne and Diego were meant to have a May 2020 wedding. They have been together over eight years, and engaged well over a year. (You might remember them from when I shared about their sweet surprise proposal story in Winter Park, or their engagement photos in Colorado Springs.)
Their celebration was to be big. They both have lots of family and friends, and everyone was invited. And then COVID-19 happened. The plans changed. They could no longer have all everyone come celebrate with them in the traditional way they’d carefully planned for months. Everything was postponed.
But about two weeks before their original wedding date, they decided they didn’t want to wait any more to get married. They picked up a marriage certificate and planned a remote camping trip far away from any paved road or cell signal. They invited their parents and closest friends to join them and witness them say “I do” to each other in a field somewhere tucked in the mountains of southern Colorado. A true campsite elopement.
Adrienne’s father officiated the ceremony. Her mom brought cupcakes and champagne and flowers. They also made matching wedding masks for everyone in attendance. While Adrienne is saving her wedding dress for the day they finally can celebrate in a bigger way, she wore a white romper with a flower crown that fit the setting beautifully. When she and her dad walked down the “aisle” to the song “Here Comes the Sun,” the actual sun peeked out from behind a cloud and shined down on them throughout the ceremony.
It was all very simple, but absolutely perfect. I don’t know many people who can make a night of sleeping on the ground and peeing in the woods look this beautiful, but it doesn’t surprise me a bit that they are the couple to do it. For a couple who is always exploring the outdoors, working out, and hanging out together, I truly can’t think of a better way to start their lives together as husband and wife.
So many couples are now faced with the decision of what to do with their wedding plans now in the time of COVID-19. I hope this goes to show that there is no single right way to do it, and the only thing that really matters is that you say yes to loving your partner for the rest of your lives. (And get a marriage license to make it legal ;))
