Michelle and Malcolm are dreamers and doers. Almost exactly a year ago, we met up for their engagement session at Suntop Lookout in Enumclaw, and I learned all about the empty lot in small-town Benton City that they planned to make into their home and wedding venue over the course of the next year. And they made it happen.
Their property in the heart of wine country in eastern Washington was the ideal spot for their one-of-a-kind wedding. They built a barn that served as a sheltered bar and sitting area. Tables lined the driveway between the barn and the house, and the twinkle-lighted patio outside the house served as the dance floor. The tables were covered in deep wine-red linens, and the centerpieces featured empty wine bottles. The girls wore red and the men wore gray suits and cowboy boots. It was the perfect mix of country-chic and classy winery vibes.
Michelle and Malcolm are clearly a well-loved couple, and they value their family and friends more than anything. They designated a spot down the hill from their house for any friends who wanted to camp out after their reception, and when you looked down there through the trees you could see a mini tent city. We spent more time on their bridal party portraits than any other kind of portraits. These friends wanted their time together celebrating the happy couple truly documented.
As the night carried on, I felt like I was more so documenting a giant reunion of college friends than a wedding, but I heartily believe that this must be the best way to celebrate a wedding. Fancy clothes turned into comfy barbeque clothes, the wine and beer started dwindling, and the dance floor filled. I pulled the bride and groom away for some sunset portraits and they just glowed with happiness, not only to be husband and wife, but to be right there, with those people, in the home they literally created for themselves from scratch.
Michelle and Malcolm, I hope you have many more nights like this to come. In between those nights, you’ll always have each other.
xoxo
