Emily had a vision for her maternity photos. When she first reach out to me, she told me she loved the idea of heading out to the mountains and creating a nature-goddess type of look for her maternity portraits. We planned to meet up at Lake Tipsoo in Mount Rainier National Park. It was right at the turn of the fall season, and all the autumn colors were starting to show themselves. We also happened to be having a gorgeous sunny day—which can be difficult to come by in Washington in October! It was like all the stars aligned for the most perfect, ethereal maternity session in the mountains.
When I met Emily and Chris in person, I could tell immediately they were my kind of people. We spent the whole afternoon chatting about favorite travels and hikes, and sharing our love of the mountains. Emily brought a gorgeous mustard yellow maternity dress that matched the turning foliage perfectly, before she ultimately changed into a sheer white maternity dress paired with a sweet flower crown, and bare feet. I think she achieved that pregnant fairy nature goddess look flawlessly. She is the absolute definition of glowing mother-to-be. I couldn’t stop marveling at how perfectly she fit into the landscape, and how the idyllic landscape so perfectly suited her vision for the day.
We went from the edge of the lake to the top of a hill among the evergreen trees, walking by wildflowers and changing leaves, and ultimately ending up right in front of the iconic peak of Mount Rainier. Along the way, we made quick friends with a deer passing through. Emily told me that deer were her spirit animal, and it was then I noticed the deer tattooed on her forearm, and the notion of her being an actual nature goddess was confirmed.
After literally the most perfect afternoon wandering around in the mountains with these two and celebrating their soon-to-be bundle of joy, Chris chose their very last moment during their session with me to drop to his knee and ask Emily a very important question. Neither of us had any idea what he had on his mind—and apparently he wasn’t even sure what his plan would be until that second! But he surely picked the most ideal spot there with the sun fading into a sunset and Mount Rainier showing off behind them.
I’m so happy that I could be there to capture these memories and this special moment for them. I’m still pinching myself to remind me everything was real, and I imagine Emily is doing the same! I just know they’re going to be amazing parents, and their lives together will be filled with so much joy and adventure.
Congratulations all around to this sweet, beautiful couple! I cannot wait to see what these next steps in their lives look like.
