The theme of Erin and Collin’s wedding was generally to show off the very best of New Mexico. They could not have chosen a better New Mexico wedding venue than the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort in Bernalillo. This place boasts some of the best views of both the Rio Grande bosque and the Sandia Mountains, and sits tucked among some of the mesas west of Albuquerque.
These two met through mutual friends in Washington, DC, where they have settled into their life together. While Collin’s family is on the east coast, Erin is from New Mexico (and happens to be one of my oldest friends, being that our parents were friends before either of us were even born!) So, since most of Erin and Collin’s guests were visitors from out of town, they were committed to giving them a true New Mexico experience. Before the wedding, they took friends to Meow Wolf in Santa Fe, and held their rehearsal dinner at the classic El Pinto restaurant, giving everyone a taste of real Hatch red and green chile, sopapillas, and the best margaritas around.
They paid homage to the southwest with their flowers and décor as well. My favorite part of Erin’s bouquet is the little piece of cactus sitting in the middle of sunset-toned flowers. It’s absolutely perfect.
Their ceremony took place beneath the cottonwoods of the Rio Grande bosque, with the Sandia Mountains looming gloriously in the background. It was a deeply personal and beautiful ceremony led by their friend Emily, who introduced them, and as they walked back up the aisle together they were greeted with a spray of bubbles. The rest of the evening went off without a hitch, and their goal to simply make their reception 100% relaxed and fun was carried out perfectly.
But before I go on, I have to talk about Erin and Collin’s sunset pictures. We snuck out of the reception right after finishing up dinner, ready to grab a few final photos among the natural landscape. What we didn’t realize until we were outside was that it had started raining, and raining hard. It’s not entirely unusual for it to rain in New Mexico, but it had been a weird week with the sheer amount of rain the area was getting. We were feeling so lucky that the weather was beautiful for their first look and the ceremony that we completely forgot about the chance the rain might return. BUT, we made the best of it. We wandered into the trees with umbrellas and caught the most beautiful golden light as the sun started setting. And then we saw it. The double rainbow. The epic, complete double arch of reflected colors sitting there in front of the mountains. The air around us glowed with the rain and the setting sun, and we ran to get the best vantage point of the rainbows. New Mexico gave these two its very best show, and I’ll never get over our luck.
It was such a joy both personally and professionally to be able to be the photographer capturing Erin and Collin’s wedding day. I’ll never forget it.
