Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Elopement by the Rio Grande

Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Elopement by the Rio Grande

Bride and groom kissing in the Rio Grande river with hot air balloons in the background for their Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta elopementBalloons are an important theme to Tessa and Reece’s relationship. Of course, hot air balloons are special to many of us from Albuquerque, New Mexico, but these two specifically love the movie Up! and have an Up!-themed anniversary book. When they started thinking about their perfect elopement, involving the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta was the dream. I vowed to make this vision of balloons floating behind the newlyweds in the sky a reality.

I recommended that we find a good spot along the Rio Grande for clear views of the Albuquerque sky on the morning of their elopement, during the week of the Balloon Fiesta. Of course, you never know exactly which way the balloons are going to fly. It is always dependent on the winds, and sometimes they don’t go up at all! So we knew we were in for a bit of a gamble.

The other perk of choosing a spot along the river is that it can be very private, perfect for an intimate elopement ceremony. We met up before sunrise, under the trees in the bosque, not another soul in sight.

Tessa and Reece wrote their own vows and read them to each other as the sky slowly started lighting up. Just as the sun started to peek over the Sandia Mountains, they exchanged wedding rings and had their first kiss. It was absolutely beautiful timing. But that wasn’t even the best part.

As the newlyweds signed their marriage license, hot air balloons started to drift right over us. We walked up the hill to get a more open view, and the balloons just sprinkled the whole sky. It all just felt like a dream, totally meant to be. We spent the rest of the morning wandering around the Rio Grande and the bosque, looking at balloons, taking photos, and just enjoying the most beautiful sunny morning in Albuquerque.
