Colorado and I are deep in our honeymoon phase. I’ll admit it. I’m so infatuated with this state and our new life here. But considering I’m not normally the biggest fan of winter and I’m writing this deep in the middle of February, I think that says something about how fit we are for each other.
We’ve lived here six months now, and I can hardly believe it’s been that long. The months have been flying by. I’ve been getting used to seeing snow fall outside my window, and then melt from the ground just a few days later. The temperatures swing from the negatives to the occasional 60-degrees. Winter seems to give way to spring, and then it comes back again. It might be enough to drive someone crazy, but I find that it keeps things interesting, and I much prefer the snow to the constant rain I experienced when we lived in Seattle.
One reason we settled on moving to Colorado is that it feels like the perfect mix of both places my husband and I have called home. While I grew up in New Mexico and that’s where we met and ultimately got married, he was born in Washington and felt perfectly at home when we moved back to the Seattle area for three years. Colorado has all the best pieces of both our home states: mountains, evergreens, and lakes, but also sunshine and stretches of desert.
We’re also much closer to our family in New Mexico here. Since we moved to Colorado, we’ve driven to Albuquerque to visit family four times, we’ve had both our parents come visit and help us move, and we have plans to host family again here in our new home next month. That’s a heck of a lot more quality time than we used to get when we lived 3 hours away by plane. We have high school and college friends who live nearby in Colorado Springs and Denver, and since joining the local Tuesdays Together group I feel like I’m already gaining a deep sense of community. I’ve been able to fill my social cup so much easier than when we lived farther away.
Even though I’m more infatuated with the winter here than I expected to be, I’m starting to itch for summer. I’m itching to explore these mountains in their summer glory. I want to go for a hike in the crisp mountain air. I want to linger outside in the sunshine. I have a list a mile long of all the places I want to road trip to these next few months. Not to mention all the weddings I have lined up at so many beautiful places throughout the summer and fall. Give me all the Colorado weddings and elopements in the Rocky Mountains! I am obsessed.
I have lived in four different states now, and while there is always something exciting about moving to a new place and getting to explore all of its nooks and crannies, I haven’t felt home like this since my actual home town. I love having a house with a back yard. I love our neighborhood. I love that Colorado Springs reminds me so much of Albuquerque—but with bigger mountains and access to the big city of Denver. I love the sunshine and the adventurous culture. Everyone loves the mountains here. I fit right in.
