Rattlesnake Lake Family Portraits | The Nelsons

One of my favorite things about the holidays is that it prompts families all over to get together for some photos. It might seem like a silly tradition. It might be hard to get everyone dressed up and ready to smile for the camera. But in the end, it’s all about creating that record of your family through time. Years down the road you may look back through your annual family photos and remark how much the kids grew that year, or remember that was the year your little one lost both front teeth, and oh, you forgot about the time your husband sported a long beard. And that’s really what it’s all about. Recording those memories to share with loved ones and cherish for the years to come.

When Princess contacted me about scheduling a family session last month, I could tell right away that she got it. She, her husband Will, and their daughter Brooklynn, are from Texas but spending a year living in Seattle and she wanted to take the opportunity to capture some of their moments living in Washington. Of course, I knew exactly what she meant. I emailed her an excited reply with a number of my suggestions for very Washington-esque locations, and of course shared the fact that I’m from New Mexico. Neighbors!

I had such a fun time getting to know this adorable little family as we breezed through our session. We talked about adjusting to living in the Pacific Northwest, moving across the country to a new place, and the music scene here. Princess is an incredibly talented singer—check her out here!—and Will, while working in the medical field to support her upcoming album, also acts as her manager. Their little Brooklynn is a real mini-me, the spitting image of her beautiful mom, and I couldn’t stop letting the shutter fly as I watched them interact. What a sweet power-family! If that’s not a thing yet, it should be.

Originally we had planned on going into Snoqualmie pass to avoid the rain in town and get some fun winter wonderland photos, but when the pass was closed beyond North Bend, we had to go with plan B. I took them to Rattlesnake Lake, fast becoming one of my favorite locations to shoot at, and we braved the rain just long enough to capture these portraits. Though it wasn’t our original plan, I think the result came out pretty perfect. As we all concluded at the end, what would a Washington portrait session be without the rain, fog, and a water + green mountain backdrop, anyway?

Thank you to the Nelsons for letting me be the one to capture your Washington memories for you. I can’t wait to buy that album and watch it blow up the world! xoxo
